Monaco

All good things come in squares. Catapulting the Monaco watch to legendary status immediately upon its release in 1969, was its bold, idiosyncratic design with the crown on the left and the fact that it was the very first watch to combine a square water-resistant case, a chronograph function and an automatic movement.
Today the watch made famous by actor Steve McQueen in the 1970 Hollywood blockbuster Le Mans comes in various colour renditions, some of which accentuate its vintage quality while others underscore its technological and functional advance.

Something more…

The square, water-resistant case was originally developed by Piquerez, a small Swiss watch component producer. When Jack Heuer found out about the innovation, he immediately entered into negotiations with the family firm as he deemed the square case a perfect match for his new Calibre 11 and, above all, because it thoroughly suited his aim to come up with something truly unconventional. It took a lot of negotiating, but finally he succeeded in closing a deal acquiring the exclusive rights to the case design. And although the watch’s extraordinary look initially met with astonishment and distrust amongst some of Jack’s more conservative employees, the bet on a solid square design soon proved to pay off, as is so evident today by its legendary status.

Collection highlight

Epitomising the Monaco collection in its purest form is the Reference CAW211R.FC6401. Its blue-orange dial refers to the colours of the Gulf Racing stable under which the famous Steve McQueen drove in the Le Mans movie. An elegant blue leather strap tops off the classic design of the 39 mm square case housing a Calibre 11 movement with a 40-hour power reserve. It is not hard to understand why this special edition is nearly sold out.
